A vibrating string or air column produces a fundamental f and overtones at whole-number multiples 2f, 3f, 4f …. The 2nd harmonic is an octave up, the 3rd a perfect fifth above that, the 4th two octaves up, and so on. The 7th and 11th are noticeably flat compared with equal temperament.
