Blocks per course = wall length ÷ block length (rounded up) and courses = wall height ÷ block height. Total = blocks per course × courses, plus waste. A cap course is usually one extra row of cap blocks on top. Walls over about 1 m generally need an engineer's design, drainage and geogrid.
