A rule of thumb is 20 BTU/h per square foot of floor area, adjusted for sunshine (+10% sunny, −10% shaded), +600 BTU/h for each person beyond two, and the heat from appliances (1 W ≈ 3.412 BTU/h). 12,000 BTU/h equals 1 ton (3.52 kW). Use a proper Manual J load calculation for whole houses.
