Volume = length × width × depth. A good raised-bed mix is about 60% topsoil, 30% compost and 10% aeration material (perlite, coarse sand or vermiculite). Bagged soil comes in 28 L (1 cu ft), 56 L (2 cu ft) and 1.5 cu ft sizes; bulk soil is sold per cubic yard or cubic metre. Add 10% for settling.
