Burning fuel releases CO₂ in proportion to its carbon content: about 2.31 kg per litre of petrol, 2.68 per litre of diesel, 1.51 per litre of LPG, 2.52 per litre of jet fuel, 2.0 kg per m³ of natural gas and 2.4 kg per kg of coal. One tree absorbs roughly 21 kg of CO₂ a year.
