Displacement per cylinder = π/4 × bore² × stroke; engine displacement = that × cylinders. Compression ratio CR = (swept volume + clearance volume) ÷ clearance volume, where clearance includes the chamber, gasket and piston dish. Higher CR gives more efficiency but needs higher-octane fuel.
